Newsletter Release: Employment Law Update

Over the last few years Birketts has seen a rise in employment disputes and litigation associated with misuse of social media. This has included potential for liability in defamation as well as Employment Tribunals and High Court litigation which is often avoided by getting practical advice on the law that governs the use of social media in relation to the workplace.

As a result of this, our team is focusing on Social Networking and Employment Law this month, with a series of seminars being held across the region.

Jolyon Berry, a partner in our Employment Team, comments: “The use of social media by employees, both in and out of work are potential issues for employers. Stories about social media are in the news every day; cases where high-profile names lose their reputation, people are sacked and companies are sued for enormous sums – these stories should be seen as a warning. Employers need to know how to act and be at the forefront of this social media wave in order to control it so that it is a positive rather than a negative or dangerous force for their business."
