Birketts advise on sale of family-owned business Anglian Bus

Birketts LLP advised Norfolk and Suffolk based Anglian Bus on the multi-million pound sale of the company to Go-Ahead group.

Anglian Bus, set up in 1981 by David and Christine Pursey, operates over 70 buses with services in Norwich, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and along the Suffolk coast to Ipswich.

Having established Anglian Bus from a start up company to the successful business it is today, the Pursey family decided the time had come to sell on the company to allow for further growth and expansion, and for David and Christine to retire.

David Pursey said: “The legal process was extremely involved and time consuming but it was made far easier by the expertise of the team at Birketts.  It was clear that Adrian and Nathan were adept and experienced in dealing with the complexities of advising family owned businesses and their input was invaluable in ensuring the deal was completed smoothly, efficiently and on time.”

The deal was advised by partner and head of Norwich corporate team Adrian Possener and senior associate and head of Norwich family business team Nathan Muskett.

Commenting on the deal, Nathan Muskett said: “We are delighted to have advised the Pursey family. We have a proven history of working with and advising family-owned businesses and our involvement in this successful deal highlights the depth of experience and capability we are able to provide.”

Go-Ahead have confirmed that they are keen to continue to expand the successful business and will retain all 130 employees including Andrew Pursey as Managing Director.  It has also pledged to keep the company’s name and distinctive brand.
