Annual golf tournament raises £7k for children’s charity

Birketts is delighted to announce that over £7k was raised for Save the Children at the 2012 charity golf day held at Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club - an event which has been sponsored by the firm for the past five years.

A record amount of £7,293 was raised by this year’s 18-hole golf day challenge, which was attended by 22 teams made up from businesses across the region. The money was raised for Save the Children through team entries and a charity auction and raffle held at an evening dinner.

Chris Schwer, Partner at Birketts, said: “During periods of economic doom and gloom, charities can often get sidelined. This is why we are incredibly proud to be associated with Save the Children and to continue to offer support to such a worthwhile cause. Despite the fact it rained on us this year, this didn’t dampen anyone’s enthusiasm or generosity and we were still able to beat last year’s total by £730. The money raised will literally help Save the Children to save lives.”

Save the Children run world-class programmes to save children’s lives and to challenge world leaders to keep to their promises to give children a brighter future. In 2011 the charity launched its No Child Born to Die campaign achieving a massive breakthrough when world leaders pledged a huge new investment in vaccinations that will save the lives of 4 million children by 2015.

Cath Bury, Chair of the Felixstowe branch of Save the Children, said: “Every year 7.6 million children under the age of five die needlessly. Through our campaigns we are working hard to make a difference to children’s lives all over the world. But we can’t do this without the ongoing support of companies like Birketts and the people who give their time to take part in fundraising events and give generously to allow us to continue in our work.”

As well as raising money for a worthwhile charity the annual golf day also enabled businesses across the region to engage in some friendly competition. Prizes were awarded on the day to; RTJ Trailers as the best overall team, Ipswich Building Society came second and Birketts were third. Ken Stewart from RTJ Trailers was the highest scoring male and Donna Griffin from Lloyds TSB was the highest scoring female.
