Living with someone else following a divorce - a second bite at the cherry?
Where a wife lives with someone else following her divorce this has historically had a detrimental impact upon the regular maintenance she received in her financial settlement. Certainly, the courts in East Anglia would then find her needs to be partly met by her new partner. However, an interesting recent case (known as W -v- W) highlights that this might not always be the case.

New rights for grandparents?
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has said that it is “crazy” that millions of grandparents lose contact with their grandchildren after a family separation or divorce. He will be setting out proposals to give greater access rights to grandparents when couples split.

Ronan Keating reveals separation
It has been announced that Boyzone star Ronan Keating has separated from his wife Yvonne after twelve years of marriage. A spokesperson has indicated that the separation is amicable and that they will continue to work together in order to provide the best for their children going forward.

What steps should employers take to help new mums return to the workplace?
A recent survey by the National Childbirth Trust has revealed that 1 in 3 women find their return to work difficult following the birth of their child. It was found that women often do not feel that they were given the assistance they required from their employer. In addition, the study found that a third of women felt that having a baby had resulted in a reduced chance of promotion, with 31% saying that their relationship with their manager had worsened since they became pregnant.

Recent articles in the press suggest that wealthy husbands or wives are gritting their teeth and remaining together until the economic market recovers to ensure they benefit from a better financial settlement. There are also many reports of couples during or post divorce being forced to live together in the matrimonial home, due to the fall in the property market making it impossible to sell their property.

First Corporate Manslaughter Prosecution
The first prosecution under the new Corporate Manslaughter Act is shortly to take place. Cotswold Geotechnical Holdings Ltd is the first UK company to be charged with corporate manslaughter following the death of an employee on 5 September 2008. The junior geologist was taking soil samples from inside a pit when it collapsed on top of him. A post-mortem revealed that he had suffocated in the mud. The company faces a separate charge under the Health and Safety at Work Act and a company director has been charged with individual manslaughter by gross negligence and a health and safety offence.
