Cricket legends to start this year’s Race4Business
Former England and Essex cricket captain Graham Gooch and current Essex all-rounder Graham Napier have been revealed as the celebrity starters of this year’s Birketts’ Race4Business on Thursday, 23 June.
Rafael Ruiz, Birketts partner and race director, commented: “This year, Birketts’ Race4Business is raising money for The J’s Hospice and a fundraising target of £23,000 has been set which would fund a J’s Hospice nurse for a year. We are absolutely thrilled to have two local sporting heroes on board. Graham Gooch has been a keen supporter of the race in previous years and to have two of Essex’s finest directly involved will really help to shine a light on our chosen charity. Around 1,000 runners are expected to take part in what should be a fantastic event.”
Graham Gooch, England's leading test run scorer, said: “Birketts has achieved a fantastic amount for a number of charities throughout the Essex region over the years. The firm does a tremendous amount in the local community and I’m delighted to back such a worthwhile charity. There are so many local families which benefit from the support of the J’s Hospice staff. I hope that every runner raises as much sponsorship as they can.”
Graham Napier added: “I have seen the annual charity race develop into one of the main events in the Chelmsford calendar and it’s an honour to be asked to start it. The momentum that has built over the years has been remarkable. I want to encourage as many businesses as possible to encourage their staff to take part, have fun and raise as much money for The J’s Hospice as possible.”
Laura Birden, corporate fundraiser for The J’s Hospice, added: “Being chosen as the charity partner for Birketts’ Race4Business is absolutely fantastic. As well as raising money, it will raise awareness of the important work that our hospice does to support young adults with life-limiting conditions and their families across Essex, in the comfort of their own homes. Without the support of the community and local businesses our service simply wouldn’t be able to operate - events like this can make a huge difference to people’s lives.”
The race, which starts beside Lloyds bank in the High Street at 6.30pm, snakes through the parks, and finishes behind Birketts’ offices in New London Road where the sports stars will present prizes.
