Birketts and FBU celebrate East Anglia’s oldest family businesses
Birketts and Family Business United (FBU) have come together to celebrate some of the longest standing family firms in Suffolk and Norfolk in The Oldest Family Businesses in East Anglia 2016. The research recognises the contribution made by some of the oldest family businesses in the region and examines their rich, personal histories.
Paul Andrews, Founder and Managing Director, Family Business United, said: “We have uncovered some true gems in compiling the first ever listing of the oldest family firms in East Anglia. The top 25 family firms in our report have collectively traded for over 4,620 years, and on average have been trading for 185 years. They have survived two World Wars, numerous recessions and economic ups and downs, as well as incredible changes in technology too. Collectively they form the very backbone of the East Anglian economy but more importantly they have all had a major impact on the communities in which they operate and have done for over a century, providing income, employment and support.”
James Austin, Head of Birketts’ Family Business team, added: “East Anglia is awash with family businesses. Suffolk and Norfolk are blessed with many great family firms who make an invaluable contribution to the regional and national economy. The oldest family firms in East Anglia have had to change over time, and continue to do so. Under their family ownership and direction, retaining the values that are important and have been for many generations, but developing them to ensure the ongoing longevity and future of the business too. These businesses have been around for generations, and hopefully will remain as family concerns for many generations to come.”
