East Anglia Family Business Day
Family firms across the region are set to take part in East Anglia Family Business Day on 31 January 2017.
Family businesses the length and breadth of the region are being encouraged to take part, sharing their pride and celebrating their family ownership via a social media campaign using the hashtag #EastAngliaFamilyBizDay2017.
Studies in the past decade have shown that around 65% of all private businesses in the UK are family controlled. Family businesses in the UK account for around 25% of UK GDP, over 45% of UK employment and invest significantly in the communities in which they operate.
As Paul Andrews, Founder and Managing Director of Family Business United, explains: “There are over four million family firms across the UK with a good concentration in East Anglia and they really are the backbone of the regional economy. All too often the endeavours of the family business sector are dismissed in favour of their non-family counterparts and the aim of East Anglia Family Business Day is to champion the sector, put family firms on the map and help to dispel the myths surrounding the family business sector.”
Adam Jones, Head of Family Business at Birketts added: “FBU has created a day for all family firms to celebrate. Family businesses deserve all the support and recognition we can give and we are proud to be part of this initiative to emphasise their importance to the region.”
Adam continued: “East Anglian family businesses come in all sizes, from all sectors and from all over the region. Many of these firms have been in existence for hundreds of years, passing from generation to generation, with their longevity the result of good governance, innovative family ownership and a focus on the long term that has resulted in them becoming the bedrock of communities across the region. Others may be younger in age, but share similar values and are building forward-looking family firms of the future.”
As well as supporting the social media campaign, Birketts’ Family-Owned Business Team and Paul Andrews will be visiting some highly successful family firms from the region during the day: Bakers and Larners, P4 and Seadall Chalets.
The day will close with The Family Business Journey at Birketts' office in Norwich. This event will explore the challenges associated with running a family business, Claire Martinsen, Founder of Breckland Orchard, will speak about her journey and there will be an opportunity for family-owned businesses to network.
