Family law practice
We adopt an ethical approach to the resolution of the many different types of relationship and family problems by supporting those experiencing family change, assisting with the practical problems, helping to address the emotional impact, and helping them manage their financial and co-parenting arrangements. We discuss with our clients what their goals are. We want our clients to have a financial future, to retain control over the outcome and to achieve closure as soon as possible.
For married, cohabiting and same-sex couples we deal with divorce, separation and dissolution. We also advise people of any potential claim they might have against the estate of a close family member or companion who has died by whom proper provision for them has not been made.
Some of our clients want to explore the possibility of signing pre-marital, pre-civil partnership registration, or cohabitation agreements in order to prevent or lessen disputes later should their relationships break down.
All of our family lawyers are members of Resolution, the family lawyers group committed to the promotion of a constructive and non-confrontational approach to family disputes. Oliver Gravell and Ian Pattinson, both partners in the team, are two of only four 'Band 1' ranked East Anglian family lawyers in Chambers [UK 2010]. In addition, six of them are seasoned collaborative practitioners, and one is a family mediator. This means that we offer a range of alternatives alongside the traditional court based approach. Whichever approach you choose, we are committed to upholding Resolution’s Code of Practice – a set of good practice guidelines that aims to reduce conflict.
"Birketts LLP is a 'top-class firm, with a compact team that is intelligent, responsive, and always on the ball'."
