Civil partners
Dissolution is the legal process which brings about the formal and legal end to a civil partnership. When a couple celebrate their civil partnership ceremony, they sign up to a wide range of duties and responsibilities which continue throughout their partnership and each is open to possible financial claims against the other if their partnership fails.
You may wish to separate from your civil partner temporarily or more permanently. Alternatively, you may want to end the partnership altogether. A final dissolution is the legal order which brings about the formal and legal end to a civil partnership.
The status of your partnership has no impact on the way in which arrangements for any children should be resolved should you and your partner not be able to reach agreement. Here, the law is neutral.
Ending the civil partnership does not automatically bring an end to the financial claims which civil partners can make against each other. Unless you obtain a final financial court order within the dissolution proceedings, you could face a claim from your former partner many years into the future.
