UK Top 50 law firm Birketts has advised SDI Group on the acquisition of PRP Optoelectronics for £9.3m plus cash.
Focusing on its buy and build strategy, this acquisition takes SDI into the avionics market and strengthens its aerospace and defence expertise.
PRP designs and manufactures bespoke high‑performance microLEDs, LED light engines and monolithic LEDs for applications ranging from avionics displays to thermal imaging and UV purification and supplies key components for programmes such as the Eurofighter Typhoon, F‑16 and F‑22 Raptor.
SDI notes that the acquisition of PRP strengthens the group’s footprint across specialist end markets occupied by portfolio companies Graticules Optics and MPB Industries.
The Birketts team was led by Corinne Spencer (Legal Director, Corporate) and supported by Macauley Alsford-White (Associate, Corporate), Anvita Oswal (Advocate, Corporate), Julia Harlock (Senior Associate, Commercial Real Estate) and Robbie Watson (Senior Associate, Corporate Tax).
Stephen Brown, Chief Executive Officer of SDI Group, said: “The acquisition of PRP is a significant milestone for SDI, marking our entry into the avionics markets. The business boasts a range of products in a very particular niche, which have applications across multiple sectors, including in aviation and on platforms such as the General Dynamics F-16 and Airbus A320, among others.”
James Dimitriou, Group Head of Corporate Development at SDI Group, added: “We are grateful to Birketts for all the hard work getting this deal across the line. It marks another successful completion together, which we are delighted about. It’s been a pleasure working with Birketts.”
Also commenting on the deal, Corinne Spencer said: “This is another great acquisition for SDI Group and, as always, it’s been a real pleasure to work with the team at SDI and assist the group in achieving its acquisitive growth strategy. Congratulations to both SDI Group and the PRP team. We are excited to see how this acquisition strengthens and expands SDI’s capabilities across its specialist technology portfolio.”
