Matthew Farrell has worked within civil litigation for fifteen years, with over twelve years’ experience working within costs specialising in both low and high-value costs claims.
Matthew has vast experience and knowledge in costs, including drafting and negotiating complex bills of costs and Precedent H Budgets, which includes preparation of Points of Dispute and Replies. He attends and advocates at court and application hearings, such as Costs and Case Management Conferences, approval hearings of protected party costs and additional liabilities, fixed costs disputes and solicitor and own client assessments. Matthew also specialises in providing tailored advice to clients to maximise cost recovery from the outset and throughout the claim to its conclusion.
Matthew studied Law at the University of Reading before completing his Legal Practice Course (LPC) at the College of Law in London. He qualified as a Solicitor in April 2015. Matthew joined Birketts in May 2026 having worked previously in London at a leading litigation-only law firm; a national trade union law firm; and a specialist military injury law firm. Matthew also mentor’s students from the University of Law who are looking to enter the legal market.

Recent work highlights
Assisted with the recovery of total costs in the region of £1.5 million during a joint settlement meeting for a high value personal injury claim.
