New Consultant buoys Birketts’ Shipping Team

Academic and commercial maritime lawyer Dr Melis Özdel has joined Birketts as a Consultant.

A member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a supporting member of the London Maritime Arbitrators’ Association, Melis specialises in shipping, international trade law, conflict of laws, and jurisdiction and international commercial arbitration. She brings with her a wealth of experience and insight, having worked as an in-house lawyer in Turkey before embarking on an academic career in the UK. Currently she takes instructions in many fields, including but not limited to: maritime contracts (including charterparties and bills of lading), sale of ships, international sale of goods, marine insurance and international commercial arbitration.

Melis is also a law academic at UCL Faculty of Laws. She is the specialism convenor for postgraduate maritime law studies. She convenes the two core shipping modules; carriage of goods by sea, and international trade law, and co-convenes the international arbitration law module. She has spoken at a number of high-profile industry events, including international maritime law conferences in Kuala Lumpur, Brazil, Hong Kong, Singapore and Istanbul. In the UK, she has also presented papers at the annual Roebuck Lecture and the London Maritime Arbitrators Association spring seminar.

As an academic, her publications include; Commercial Maritime Law (2020, Hart Publishing, Editor and Co-Author), Right to Delivery of Goods under Contracts of Carriage (2020, Hart Publishing, Co-Author), and Bills of Lading Incorporating Charterpartiers (2015, Hart Publishing, Author).

Talking after her appointment, Melis said: “I am excited to start a new chapter at Birketts.
