Birketts’ property lawyers in Cambridge were awarded Property Team of the Year at the Cambridgeshire Law Society’s annual Legal Excellence Awards gala. This is the third time the team have won this award.
The dinner, hosted at King’s College on 22 April, recognises the achievements of lawyers and law firms throughout the Cambridgeshire region. The society has about 1,000 members who work in the legal sector and as in-house counsel, from multi-national businesses to sole trading Solicitors.
Birketts’ Cambridge Commercial Property Team were delighted to win the award following another strong year of growth, and contributing to a record £69.2m turnover for the firm in 2020/21 – with the firmwide Property division accounting for 36% of the total. A number of high-profile transactions in the last 12 months highlight the skills of the team, most notably the advice on the sale of leading independent property developer, Hopkins Homes Limited, to private equity firm Terra Firma. Cambridge-based Partner and Head of Birketts’ firmwide Planning and Environment Team, Tom Newcombe, and Partner Nick Pickersgill both advised on the deal. Nick is also a key member of the firm’s Real Estate Finance Team, which grew 130% in 2020/21, acting for clients such as M7 and Westbrook Partners .
