Liz Brownsell, Partner and Head of Birkett’s Charities Team, has been selected as an expert adviser for Amnesty International.
Amnesty International is the world’s leading human rights organisation, campaigning against injustice and inequality. It has more than ten million members and supporters around the world.
The selection comes after Birketts was instructed to undertake a comprehensive review of the governance structure of the international movement. This work involved a review of Amnesty International’s key governance documents and the provision of a report summarising the governance structure, its interplay with key legal requirements, areas where there is scope for improvement and Birketts’ recommendations.
On her selection, Liz Brownsell said: “I have advised Amnesty International on a range of charity law and governance matters for many years. As a grassroots global movement, Amnesty International’s governance is complex and challenging. I was delighted to be instructed to carry out a comprehensive governance review and present to the International Board in June. As a result of this work, I am proud to have been selected by the International Board as their expert adviser for an upcoming major governance reform project. I’m looking forward to being involved in such a significant project for Amnesty International’s future.”
Rebecca Jefferies, Director of Legal and Governance at Amnesty International said: “Liz Brownsell is a trusted adviser to Amnesty International. Liz combines her in depth knowledge of the charity and INGO sector with a pragmatic approach and she is a pleasure to work with. Liz has been selected by our International Board as an expert adviser as we commence a major governance reform project and I am looking forward to working with her closely on that.”
