Ian has worked in London and the Lloyd’s insurance market for most of his career, on both the broking and underwriting side, and with a leading Lloyd’s managing agent for ten years. Since moving into private practice, firstly with EC3 Legal (which subsequently merged with Birketts in April 2020), Ian has continued working with, and advising insurers, insurance brokers, cover holders, MGAs and other third party insurance intermediaries and service providers operating in the market.
Ian also has experience in corporate governance and insurance regulatory matters, and has and continues to work closely with the Managing General Agents’ Association. He has been involved in a number of insurance related transactions, and his expertise ranges from advising on start-ups through to large corporate transactions involving the sale and purchase of broking companies and businesses, the transfer of renewal rights and run-off arrangements. He has also advised on wide ranging commercial and regulatory areas.
Ian's work in Lloyd’s includes advising on third party syndicate management agreements. Ian’s client are primarily UK based, but he has experience of working with clients in the US and Bermuda, and more recently advising a client on establishing a cell as part of a PCC in Malta, as part of its BREXIT planning. In the past Ian has worked on matters relating to a s166 investigation and a past business review of how retail customers were being treated which involved working with customer facing areas of the business, and with compliance monitoring, QA and internal audit.
Ian was admitted as a Solicitor in September 1994.
