Our Insurance and Reinsurance Team has extensive experience of advising major (re)insurers in the London, Bermudian and International markets

The team adopts a practical, pragmatic, collaborative and cross-disciplinary approach, focusing on delivering solutions and resolutions.

The practice comprises two distinct areas:

Coverage and Contentious (Re)Insurance (Non-Marine & Marine)
Much of the team’s work is international in nature, and our experts have been heavily involved in many of the major market issues over the last 25 years, dealing with coverage disputes in excess of 60 jurisdictions and often acting as co-ordinating counsel working with experienced overseas practitioners. The Team also has in depth experience of litigating and arbitrating disputes, both in the UK and abroad.

Non-Contentious
The team is regularly involved in drafting wordings, structuring programmes (in particular for Captives) and global programmes. The non-contentious team has also worked with both Lloyd’s brokers and non-Lloyd’s brokers, cover holders, MGAs, Lloyd’s syndicates and third-party insurance intermediaries and service providers operating in the general insurance market. The scope of our advice covers a broad range of matters including corporate/M&A advisory work, governance and FCA insurance regulation, underwriting, claims and run-off arrangements.

Birketts has a niche team which specialises in the sale and purchase of Lloyd’s Limited Liability Vehicles, through which private or corporate investors can invest capital into the London market.
