Application Process

Summer Vacation Application Process

Save the date! Our award winning summer scheme will take place across two weeks, w/c 24 June 2024 and w/c 1 July 2024. You will need to be available for both weeks in full.

When do I apply?

You should apply online between 6 November 2023 and 8 January 2024.

Who should apply?

We welcome anyone to apply for the scheme who fits both our academic criteria and firm values, who is available to start a training contract in two years’ time, i.e. penultimate and final year law students, final year non-law students and graduates.

What makes a great Birketts trainee?

We welcome applications from people with strong academic backgrounds with a minimum of a 2:1 degree (or be on course to achieve a 2:1) as well as good A Level results. Applications are welcome from both law and non-law students.

On your behalf, we asked our trainees what skills and attributes they feel make a great trainee here at Birketts.  A selection of answers from our current cohort includes: “enthusiastic”, “conscientious”, “adaptable”, “friendly”, “organised”,  “curious”, “versatile”, “driven” and “thoughtful” – we hope that helps!

How do I apply?

All applications for training contracts should be made using our online application system.

If you have a disability that prevents you from completing the form online please contact us on 01473 406281 so that we can make alternative arrangements.

Following an initial sift, as part of our selection process, you will be asked to complete an online interactive assessment, which contains a variety of question types to assess your potential. Some of the questions will be scenario-based, while others will ask you to review information and select the most appropriate response to colleague queries. The assessment has been designed to look for grit and determination, a willingness to embrace our digital reality and the ability to apply your creativity and knowledge to solve any problem. You will not need any pre-existing knowledge or subject matter expertise to perform strongly on the assessment, all we would ask is that you complete it honestly. At the end of the assessment, you will also receive a feedback report to help you understand how you performed and highlight any potential development opportunities. If you are invited to complete the interactive assessment, you will also receive a link to complete a practice assessment, and there will be an explanatory video at the start of the real assessment as well.

When will interviews take place?

Interviews will take place between 24 January and 9 February 2024.

What will the interview be like?

We seek to interview between 40-50 potential interns to shortlist from. You will be interviewed at the office to which you have applied by two Partners and the interview will last approximately 45 minutes to one hour.  During which, the Partners will aim to gain a full understanding of your application to us, your motivations, your experience in either the work place or during study, an insight to your interests and personality – you will be asked to prepare a 7-10 minute presentation of your choice to allow us to get to know you better!  We love to hear your questions too, come armed with interesting ones!

If you have any queries not answered on these pages, please email [email protected]
