Legal Director (Barrister)

Alec is a Legal Director in our Intellectual Property Law (Contentious) Team based in the Cambridge office. Alec was admitted as a Barrister in 1998 and joined Birketts in September 2023.

Alec advises on a wide range of intellectual property law disputes acting for clients in contentious matters involving copyright, trade marks, misuse of confidential information, the law of passing off, design rights and patents. He also acts for clients in relation to defamation and breach of privacy claims. He advises clients on contentious data protection matters including ‘right to be forgotten’ claims and contested subject access requests and information requests made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and Environmental Information Regulations 2004.

Alec’s contentious intellectual property experience covers a wide range of products and services from digital images, published literary content (print and online), audio-visual content and software to beauty products, jewellery, designer furniture and vaping kits. He has also extensive experience of handling IP claims involving digital intermediary service providers.

He represents clients in the High Court, the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court,  the UK Intellectual Property Office, the UK Information Commissioner’s Office and the Independent Press Standards Organisation.

Alec’s industry sector experience covers publishing (print and online), technology, social media and retail (both online and instore). He regularly handles cases with an international dimension working with clients to achieve strategic goals in co-ordination with local counsel in other jurisdictions.

He offers clients commercially focussed advice and, where appropriate, assists clients with negotiation of settlement agreements.

Alec also has experience regarding non-contentious IP matters including IP licensing or assignments and IP aspects of corporate transactional and commercial work.

Alec holds an L.L.M. in intellectual property law.
