Steven joined Birketts in January 2020 and qualified as a Solicitor in our Construction and Engineering Team in February 2020. Before joining the team, he trained at a local firm in Norfolk where he gained experience in a broad range of civil and commercial disputes.

Contentious experience

Steven acts for clients, contractors, sub-contractors and consultants in adjudications, court litigation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution such as mediation. As a litigator, Steven assists individuals and corporate clients in bringing or defending court claims.

In addition to court litigation, Steven also regularly assists his clients in adjudications. Steven takes pride in assisting his clients in reaching a successful resolution and has acted in a variety of disputes. Those include interim and final account valuation disputes, allegations of defects, disputes as to payments and arguments concerning the validity and quantum of variations, delay and loss and expense claims.

As with all contentious matters, strategy, risk and cost are key considerations and Steven has frank conversations at the outset regarding the approach in order to achieve the best result possible for his clients. Whether the case requires a robust approach or a tactical manoeuvre in order to achieve a settlement of a dispute, Steven tenaciously fights for his clients to achieve the best possible outcome.

Non-contentious experience

In addition to his work on contentious matters, Steven has experience in advising on and preparing full suites of construction documentation. This includes both assisting with amended and unamended JCT contracts, appointments, warranties, guarantees and undertaking contract reviews.

Steven also provides support in share purchase and property acquisition matters, reporting on construction documentation and issues in context of the transaction.

Steven is based in our Norwich office.

During his undergraduate degree, Steven read law at the University of Lincoln where he graduated with a First Class degree. He subsequently studied for his Masters degree in Law at the University of Nottingham where he graduated with a Distinction. As a part of his vocational studies and training, Steven undertook the Legal Practice Course at BPP in Cambridge, graduating with a Distinction.

Steven follows the latest legal developments impacting the Construction Sector and enjoys writing articles about noteworthy cases.  He provides training sessions, webinars and presentations to clients and professionals working in the sector on payment mechanisms and legal updates, including developments in recent case law.
