Birketts provides pro bono legal advice in collaboration with East Greenwich Legal Advice Clinic
18 April 2024
UK Top 50 law firm Birketts has teamed up with East Greenwich Legal Advice Clinic (EGLAC) to make legal assistance more accessible to those who cannot afford it.
Together, Birketts and EGLAC are providing essential support by running clinics to the community covering a range of legal issues from contracts and family disputes to Wills and probate. The first clinic ran on 30 January 2024, and continues to run every last Tuesday of the month. So far, the initiative has run two further clinics (in February and March) totalling over 80 hours of volunteer time. To date, the clinics have assisted 15 individuals, offering valuable advice and guidance.
This initiative is being led by Will May (Solicitor, Corporate) and Lauren Guiler (Solicitor, Family) who are both based in Birketts’ London office.
Speaking about the initiative, Will said: “Now, more than ever, the provision of pro bono legal advice to those who may not otherwise be able to afford it is vital. I am pleased that 15 lawyers from our London office have already provided essential volunteer hours at our monthly EGLAC sessions. Our work so far is only the beginning, and we will continue to partner with Emma and the EGLAC team to extend its reach and help even more individuals in need of assistance across South East London.”
Lauren added: “We are extremely proud of the work and progress that has been made so far with this partnership. Providing pro bono support to the local community is so important and the impact is clear, demonstrating the significance of accessible legal advice in the community.”
In addition to the clinics, Lauren and a number of her Birketts colleagues will be completing a half marathon in September to raise funds for EGLAC. The fundraising page can be found here.
