Matthew joined Birketts’ Private Client Advisory Team in January 2020, and is an Associate based in our Cambridge office. He qualified as a Solicitor in October 2016.

Matthew advises individuals in relation to matters across the private client advisory spectrum.

From a succession perspective, Matthew advises clients in relation to all areas of estate planning during their lifetime. This includes the preparation of wills and powers of attorney (together with advising on issues arising out of the same), in addition to advising on taxation and the administration of trusts.

Matthew is also able to advise on mental capacity issues, including how best to support those who are unable to manage their own personal and financial affairs.

Matthew is also experienced in dealing with estate administration. He is able to deal with probate applications, as well as administering both taxable and non-taxable estates. He can advise both executors and beneficiaries in relation to the probate process. Matthew also has experience in dealing with complex probate issues, including dealing with intestate estates, cross-border estates (where he recently dealt with estates spanning Scotland, Ireland, France and Spain) as well as estates with agricultural aspects.

Matthew is an Affiliate Member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).

Matthew studied History at the University of Southampton, before converting to law. He successfully completed the Graduate Diploma in Law and the Legal Practice Course at the University of Law, before undertaking his training contract at a large regional law firm in Kent.

Outside of work, Matthew enjoys scuba diving (both in the cold waters of the UK, and in sunnier climes!), travelling and attending live football matches. He is also a long-suffering supporter of Plymouth Argyle.
