Charlotte qualified into the Utilities Team in September 2020 after completing her two year training contact at Birketts. Using the skills and knowledge Charlotte obtained during her training within the Commercial Property SIPP, Intellectual Property, Regulatory and Corporate Defence and Family teams, she now completes a high volume of transfers, deeds of easement and leases for statutory undertakers within the electric, gas, fibre and water industries. Most of the transactions relate to easements for new pipes, wires and cables and the substations, governors, cabinets and pumping stations they run to and from. Charlotte does assist clients with the maintenance, repair and renewing of existing utilities infrastructure too. Charlotte also advises clients on the practical and commercial aspects of the transactions and collaborates with DNO’s, IDNO’s, ICP’s and third parties to ensure our clients obtain the land rights they require for their connections.

Over the last few years, Charlotte has developed her understanding of the utilities industry, including the legislation and regulations statutory undertakers have to comply with. Attending external and internal training courses, utilities events such as ‘Utility Week Live’ and the ‘EV show’ and client offices to assist clients first hand with any queries, have also added to Charlotte’s expertise.

Prior to joining Birketts, Charlotte graduated from the University of Kent with a 2:1 in Law where she represented the university in national and international mediation competitions, which resulted in the team being ranked fourth internationally and voted the best mediation team by the fellow competitors and completed the Legal Practice Course at BPP University in Cambridge.

Outside of work Charlotte enjoys painting, pyrography, up-cycling furniture and baking cakes. She even used her baking skills to organise a charity bake sale at our Ipswich office for Stand Up to Cancer, which raised nearly £300. Charlotte has also taken opportunities to get involved with local community projects such as painting a local community hall, attending the Mayor’s Annual Charity Quiz and conducting a litter pick on a local beach.
