Deborah joined Birketts in August 2019. She is a Partner in our Planning and Environmental Team and deals with a range of environmental and planning work as well as advising in connection with public rights of way. Deborah qualified as a solicitor in 1990.

Deborah has over 28 years’ experience as a solicitor specialising in environmental law and acting for a wide range of clients including manufacturers, farmers and landowners, waste management businesses and private individuals. She advises on contentious and non-contentious matters including alleged breaches of environmental permits, abatement notices relating to statutory nuisance, environmental impact assessment and claims relating to the modification of the definitive map to add rights of way.  

She also acts in relation to some types of civil contentious matters, particularly judicial review and other statutory challenges to decisions by public bodies. She has recent experience of advising in relation to a challenge to the grant of hazardous substances consent and in relation to challenges to the grant of permission for poultry rearing facilities. Frequently she represents the interested party who has the benefit of the decision that is being challenged.

Deborah represents clients in PACE Act interviews and acts as an advocate in the magistrates’ courts and at public inquiries.
