Ben Hersom

Associate

Ben is an Associate in the Commercial Real Estate Team in Chelmsford.

Ben read Film at the University of Southampton, graduating in the summer of 2009 with a First-Class Honours degree before working for a brief spell in film and television. In 2012, needing to scratch an altogether different academic itch, Ben went back to university to study Law, and, in the summer of 2013, Ben was awarded a commendation in his Graduate Diploma in Law.

Ben completed his Legal Practice Course, the vocational qualification needed to qualify as a solicitor, part-time whilst undertaking his training contract at a firm in the West End, London, successfully qualifying as a solicitor in September 2016 after receiving a distinction for his efforts on the LPC.

Since then, Ben has gained a broad range of experience in general commercial property matters at well-established regional law firms in Essex before joining Birketts’ Commercial Property Team in Chelmsford in June 2023. During that time, Ben acted on behalf of a variety of corporate and private individuals, advising and assisting them with the management of their asset portfolios, including the acquisition and disposal of freehold or leasehold assets, the grant or acceptance of new leases (including renewals inside and outside of Part II of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954), and advising on and dealing with applications for various leasehold consents.

More recently, Ben has acted on a complex option agreement involving two different overage agreements concerning two different parcels of land in one title including both residential and commercial property. Ben also benefited from a short spell assisting with and advising on the management of a large estate of a national well-known car parking brand before turning his mind back to private practice where he excels.

At Birketts, Ben furthers his experience in general commercial property where he employs his technical skill, keen eye for detail and personable nature to further the best interests of his clients.

Outside of work, Ben remains a dedicated fan of cinema, enjoying regular trips to the cinema, and a lukewarm football fan, exploiting his family’s season ticket at the London Stadium whenever he gets the opportunity. If Ben is not spending his time at either of these two venues, he might be found at the gym, reading a book by one of his favourite authors or hiking at any one of the numerous areas of natural beauty that can be found in the UK.
