Gavin Coull

Gavin is a Partner specialising in contentious and non-contentious reinsurance. He heads up Birketts’ broader Insurance Sector offering.

He has practiced in this area for over 25 years, representing major London Market (both Lloyd’s and Companies) (re)insurers, and international carriers in Bermuda, Europe, North America and elsewhere globally.

Gavin’s practice focuses on complex coverage and dispute resolution for reinsurers and reinsureds, in respect of both Treaty and Facultative, as well as complex direct and Excess of Loss business. He has advised in respect of a broad range of non-marine classes of business, including property, specie, engineering, contingency, political risk, terrorism, casualty and life sciences. Over recent years he has been heavily engaged in numerous high value confidential arbitrations arising out of the Covid 19 pandemic.

Much of the team’s work is international in nature, and Gavin has been and remains heavily involved in many of the major market issues and claims over the last 25 years, dealing with coverage disputes in excess of 60 jurisdictions and often acting as co-ordinating counsel working with experienced overseas practitioners. He has extensive experience of arbitrations, institutional, ad hoc and Bermuda Form. Gavin and the team pride themselves as being “part of the market.” As such, Gavin was one of the founding Executive Committee Members and subsequently President, of the London Forum of Insurance Lawyers.

In addition to his contentious practice, Gavin also advises on insurance and reinsurance programme structuring and wordings, both traditional and alternative.

Gavin was admitted as a Solicitor in September 1997.
