Jane joined Birketts as a Solicitor in our Planning and Environmental Team (Ipswich) in October 2021. Having qualified with a local firm in 2018, she spent three years in their Environment and Dispute Resolution Team where she was able to develop skills in civil litigation. 

Shortly after joining Birketts, Jane went on secondment as Project Manager for the Broads Peat Discovery Project. This was a DEFRA funded project aimed at developing peat restoration plans, associated nature-based solutions for carbon management and identifying private finance streams for future funding. Jane was the Peat Project Manager between February 2022 and August 2023 during which time she led a team undertaking a wide range of surveys, stakeholder engagement, landowner workshops and other studies which contributed to the planning of peat restoration in the region.  

The project linked her technical and legal skills and built on her 25-year career working in Environmental Management prior to entering the legal profession. As an Environmental Manager, Jane was involved a variety of major regeneration and infrastructure projects including Legoland, Windsor, the Millennium Dome, Newhaven Port Masterplan, product development for a floating, wind measuring device to aid offshore wind farm development.

She has also led in site sequential studies for offshore wind infrastructure, Environmental Impact Assessments for the Lahore Ring Road, Pakistan and Dover Harbour Board – Terminal 2 Extension. Jane has worked in the public and private sectors (in the UK and overseas) where she has gained a robust understanding of delivering complex projects. 

Examples of matters she has been involved with: 

  • Assisting with protected species survey planning and relocation agreements.
  • Advising landowners regarding unlawful waste deposits on their land.
  • Advising landowners regarding compliance with tree restocking notices.

Prior to joining Birketts, Jane completed her PGDL with Distinction from Brighton University and her Legal Practice Course with Commendation from BPP University, London. Jane has a BSc in Environmental Science and two Masters degrees – Integrated Pollution Management and Environmental Law. She is a trustee for the UK Environmental Law Association (UKELA) and a Non-Executive Member of Chapter for St Edmundsbury Cathedral.

Outside work, Jane enjoys rowing, cycling and sailing and has a keen interest in music.
