Jennie Kingham
Jennie Kingham joined Birketts in March 2020 as a Senior Associate in our court of protection team, part of our private client division.
Jennie is the co-head of the court of protection team and has more than 25 years’ experience specialising in private client work. She acts as a professional Deputy and Attorney in looking after the property and financial affairs of individuals who lack mental capacity. Jennie also deals with a wide variety of applications to the Court of Protection, including in relation to statutory wills, gifts and for the appointment of replacement trustees. In addition, Jennie advises clients in contested matters such as Attorney or Deputy disputes.
Jennie moved to Ipswich in 1996 after leaving university. Prior to joining Birketts, she worked for two large local firms, completing her qualification as a Chartered Legal Executive in 2003, and has built her reputation in Suffolk with clients and connectors alike. Jennie is experienced in public speaking, regularly giving presentations to fellow professionals.
Recent work highlights
Advising in multiple Court of Protection applications for the same family, including statutory will, gifting and estate administration matters involving UK and overseas assets. Managing urgency, international elements and capacity issues
Advising a public body in cross border Court of Protection welfare proceedings concerning residence and contact. Securing declarations and orders confirming long term placement arrangements and supporting structured family contact in the client’s best interests.
Advising a family member with concerns relating to the suitability of proposed deputies and the way in which their appointment had been secured. Negotiating amended court orders to improve transparency and oversight, avoiding escalation into contested proceedings.
