Katie Mayes
Katie is a Senior Associate (Chartered Legal Executive) in our Court of Protection Team.
Katie qualified as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives in 2012 and joined Birketts in March 2020, having previously worked at two large regional firms. Katie has over 20 years of experience in Court of Protection law.
Katie acts as professional deputy and attorney for individuals who have lost the requisite mental capacity to make financial decisions themselves, or where an individual retains capacity she supports them to make their own decisions. Katie also deals with a wide variety of applications to the Court of Protection, including but not limited to in relation to the appointment of deputies, statutory wills, gift applications and for the appointment of replacement trustees. Katie represents clients in contested Court of Protection proceedings, acting on behalf of applicants, respondents and Litigation Friends.
Katie has a wealth of Court of Protection experience, with a particularly focus on complex property and affairs matters, and contentious cases. Katie provides clear and practical advice. She prides herself on managing her cases sensitively, and takes a proactive and thorough approach in matters.

Managing the affairs of an individual in a complex deputyship case arising from a PI claim. Adopting innovative and creative approaches in managing the affairs of an individual who has very limited insight into their lack of ability in a financial context.
October 2023
Successfully represented a respondent in statutory will proceedings, securing an agreement with the applicant and the Official Solicitor for an order for the execution of a statutory will on behalf of P.
September 2023
Successfully represented Attorney in securing NHS Continuing Healthcare Funding.
