Marcos joined Birketts in 2005, originally as a Lawyer in the Commercial Property Team in Norwich. As a specialist in property development work he has acted for developers and landowners on a variety of commercial and residential development projects, both regionally and nationally, as well as representing funders backing such schemes. Over time he also developed expertise advising landowners on strategic land projects, principally for large scale residential and mixed use projects in the east of England.
Having been a Partner for a number of years, Marcos has now adopted a dual role supporting the firm’s lawyers to be at the leading edge of both property law and service delivery. As a Professional Support Lawyer, Marcos’ role involves ensuring that the firm’s 200+ property lawyers are kept up to date with all the latest developments in property law. This includes taking responsibility for maintaining the firm’s precedent banks and providing updates and training to the various property teams. He also writes articles for the firm’s publications and delivers public seminars (including for RICS) and bespoke client training sessions on various aspects of property law.
As part of this role Marcos has worked closely with HM Land Registry (the government department responsible for registering land in England and Wales) to help them deliver new services to their law firm customers. This has led to the firm helping to shape how the Registry deliver their services as well as being a pilot user of new services, which has given the firm early access to key products before these are available to other law firms.
He has been able to draw on over 25 years’ experience as a transactional lawyer to ensure that the firm’s lawyers continue to deliver the practical and commercial advice that our clients have come to expect.
In his role as the Head of Knowledge Management Marcos leads a team of Professional Support Lawyers and Library Information staff supporting the wider firm. This includes ensuring that our lawyers remain up to date with the latest developments in the law and the impacts for our clients and also how we can stay ‘ahead of the game’. This includes delivering projects to ensure consistency and quality in every aspect of the firm’s work. This involves working closely across the firm’s Business Services teams from developing policies and standard working practices and supporting professional development programmes to develop a distinctive “Birketts” Lawyer.
Now that he has stepped back from a fee earning role, Marcos works closely with his colleagues looking for innovative ways of working; whether that involves a change of process, or strategically deploying technology solutions to support our lawyers to produce outstanding client service.
Marcos is based at our Ipswich office.
Marcos is a member of the Association of Property Support Lawyers. In his spare time he enjoys cycling and has recently discovered a passion for amateur dramatics!
