Thomas Carley is a Partner in our residential real estate team.

With more than 18 years’ experience in real estate, he qualified as a Solicitor in July 2011 and joined Birketts in November 2018. Thomas leads our Chelmsford-based team of 21 and heads the firm’s residential property finance offering.

Thomas advises landlord companies that are expanding or refinancing buy‑to‑let portfolios and is regularly instructed on complex corporate funding arrangements, portfolio financing and dual/sole‑representation lending matters. As a result of his refinancing work he is trusted by specialist lenders (including those operating closed lender panels) and works closely with a network of specialist mortgage brokers, attracting repeat instructions from borrowers with substantial portfolios across the UK and internationally.

Recent work includes the refinance of a £15m London penthouse for a high‑net‑worth individual and an increasing volume of inter‑company portfolio refinancing, with portfolios ranging from 2 to 250 units. Thomas also acted for three specialist banks to complete 70 mortgages on the same day, enabling the buyer to fund a £24m portfolio acquisition.

Thomas’ team has particular expertise in Sharia‑compliant finance and commercial lending solutions for corporate entities. He is frequently instructed by high‑net‑worth clients on complex residential refinance and restructuring matters.
