Your personal invitation from the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire, David Way

It gives me great pleasure to send you a personal invitation to this conference.

Modern Day Slavery is a terrible and an evil curse which afflicts millions of people worldwide. Despite the valiant efforts of our police forces, it is on the increase, and is accordingly receiving growing attention in the media. Customers and consumers are very likely to turn against any businesses which are perceived to be on the wrong side of the matter. Businesses now have little choice but to try to grapple with the many related challenges that arise, for example in reviewing their supply chains. The High Sheriff’s Business Conference is therefore intended to provide a confidential and practical forum in which businesses and business groups can come together.

My ultimate aim is to move Cambridgeshire towards becoming the very first county in the UK to be free from slavery. I hope you will agree that would be a very worthwhile objective.

With the excellent support of Birketts, the leading southern England law firm, we have assembled an outstanding group of panellists and speakers; we will discuss and debate and, I hope, agree on the wording for a Cambridgeshire Charter of Best Practice against Modern Day Slavery, the adoption of which would be a key first step in this project, and which in itself could do much to put businesses on the right side of these issues.

It would be wonderful therefore if you were able to join me at Magdalene College on the 15 January 2025.
