Birketts hosts Ipswich Academy students as part of Wolsey 550 campaign

Birketts has hosted year 10 students from Ipswich Academy as part of the Thomas Wolsey 550 initiative, of which the firm is a Founding Partner.
The 11 students, who signed up for the experience having expressed an interest in careers in law, visited Birketts’ Ipswich office to experience the workplace environment and gain an understanding of what a law career can look like.
Lizzy Ferguson, Early Careers Officer for Birketts, led the workshop, with contributions from Trainee Solicitor Cecily Hayton and Partner James Dinwiddy. The session provided an introduction to Birketts; an insight into the work of a Trainee in the Private Client Team; an activity exploring Wills, tax and probate; and a guided tutorial on how to build a personal brand.
Of the 11 students who attended the workshop, eight said that it resulted in them being keen to pursue a career in law.
“I wanted to get more of an understanding of what working in law looks like. I found it useful to see the differences between barristers and solicitors. It’s definitely (the experience) made me consider it as a career- it’s more exciting than I thought.” – Thomas
“Knowing about the different routes into law was really useful – think this is something that a lot of young people have no understanding of. It’s definitely helped me visualise my options.” – Jannah
Speaking about the initiative, Lizzy Ferguson, Early Careers Officer at Birketts, said: “It was a pleasure to host the students at our Ipswich office and provide a valuable and accessible insight into Birketts and careers in law. The students were really engaged throughout, and I hope that we showed just how many options there are for young people from all walks of life both at our firm and others. We’re looking forward to continuing our relationship further with Ipswich Academy and to introduce even more students to the law.”
