21 March 2023
Birketts, a Top 50 law firm, has helped to establish a bespoke ‘start-ups’ service in its support of the University of Suffolk Legal Advice Centre.
Having been established in November 2021, the Legal Advice Centre offers pro bono services for those seeking advice in family law and business law. From its inception, the Corporate Team at Birketts has assisted in providing advice around a variety of issues in the business law clinic, from franchising and company structure, to intellectual property.
Birketts has helped the development of an innovative new offering for the Legal Advice Centre, which has now led to the Centre being nominated for the LawWorks Attorney General Awards.
The bespoke ‘start-ups’ service, provides a unique advice service on issues which directly relate to matters arising in starting a new business. With the use of technology, Birketts’ Corporate Team attends virtual meetings with clients in order to enable greater flexibility for both clients and lawyers. Drawing on different departments within the firm, Birketts’ support is highly targeted to the diverse range of issues often encountered by new businesses.
On Birketts’ support of the University of Suffolk Legal Advice Centre, Amanda Timcke, Senior Associate, said: “Birketts is a proud advocate of the University of Suffolk Legal Advice Centre. The award nominated is a credit to the hard work and dedication of the University, its staff and its students.
“We are particularly pleased to be offering our support to the ‘start-up’ service. Entrepreneurialism is an important part of the local economy, yet those starting up can often have low incomes or little capital to spend on legal advice. Through the Legal Advice Centre we’re now able to provide this support pro bono, and we’re looking forward to helping many more local businesses to thrive.”
Eleanor Scarlett of the Legal Advice Centre said: “We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from Birketts in the provision of legal advice to businesses over the last year. The evolution of this support into advising ‘start-ups’ or ‘new businesses’ is not only an invaluable educational opportunity for our students, but also a brilliant and dynamic service to be offering in the community.
