Jane joined Birketts as a Solicitor in our Planning and Environmental Team (Ipswich) in October 2021. Prior to joining Birketts, Jane completed her PGDL with Distinction from Brighton University and her Legal Practice Course with Commendation from BPP Law School in London. Having qualified with a local firm in 2018, she spent three years in their Environment and Dispute Resolution Team where she was able to develop skills in civil litigation and environmental regulation.
Jane has a strong focus on Environmental Law, building on her 25-year career working in Environmental Management prior to entering the legal profession. In her role as an Environmental Manager Jane was involved a number of major regeneration projects including Legoland, Windsor, the Millennium Dome, Newhaven Port Masterplan and site sequential studies for offshore wind infrastructure. She has led a number of Environmental Assessments including the Lahore Ring Road, Pakistan and the Dover Harbour Board – Terminal 2 Extension. Jane has worked in both the public and private sectors (in the UK and overseas) where she has gained a robust understanding of delivering complex development projects.
Below are some examples of matters she has been involved with:
- Advising landowners with regard to unlawful waste deposits on their land
- Acting for a business with regard to environmental permitting and waste management
- Negotiating settlements regarding replacement domestic waste water treatment plants and redirection of permitted discharges to avoid agricultural land
- Providing advice in relation to Japanese Knotweed
Jane has a BSc in Environmental Science and Masters degrees in both Integrated Pollution Management and Environmental Law. She is a trustee for the UK Environmental Law Association (UKELA) and a Co-convenor for the UKELA East regional group.
