Experience

Melanie is a dual qualified Solicitor and Costs Lawyer with both a shipping and costs law practice. 

She trained with Birketts and qualified into the Shipping and International Trade Team as a Solicitor in September 2011. Melanie has a broad experience of advising clients in relation to dry shipping matters and her core practice involves handling charterparty disputes and pursuing and defending cargo claims. Her experience covers both High Court and LMAA Arbitrations, including:

  • Representing a ship owner in a complex High Court claim for recovery of General Average contributions. The matter settled shortly before it was listed for trial.
  • Acting for ship owners in a multi-million pound LMAA Arbitration arising from unpaid hire and early redelivery. Two Arbitration awards were issued in favour of our client.

Melanie qualified as a Costs Lawyer in September 2020 and supports the firm’s Litigation Department with all aspects of costs law. She has particular experience in preparing Bills of Costs, Points of Dispute and Replies in detailed assessment proceedings as well as precedent H and R for Costs and Case Management Conferences. 

Melanie is based at our Ipswich office.

Other Information

Melanie studied Law with European Legal Systems at the University of East Anglia and Lunds Universitet (Sweden) before completing her Legal Practice Course (LPC) at the College of Law in Chester. 

Melanie is a member of the Association of Costs Lawyers.
