Nellie has specialised in Intellectual Property law since 2000. She qualified as a Barrister and Solicitor in New Zealand in 2002, working for a leading New Zealand IP firm. She became dual qualified as a Solicitor in the UK in October 2008 and spent ten years at a leading London IP firm. She joined Birketts in January 2016 and is now a Legal Director in our Intellectual Property Team.

Her experience covers the full range of intellectual property issues (both contentious and non-contentious), and Nellie has particular experience in relation to trade mark and brand protection matters covering brand clearance searches, filing strategy, portfolio management, global brand launches and restructuring, advertising regulation and multi-platform advertising clearance. She also advises on trade mark disputes and handles contentious proceedings (oppositions, revocation and invalidity actions) before the UKIPO and EUIPO, as well as negotiating settlements, including the drafting of subsequent co-existence agreements and the like.

In addition to her core brands-related work, Nellie has experience in dealing with anti-counterfeiting actions and preparing commercial agreements relating to the development and exploitation of IP rights.

Though a private practice lawyer, Nellie has gained valuable in house experience over the years through secondments to a number of well-known brand owners in the UK and to the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising.

She works with a diverse range of clients in a variety of sectors from individuals through to global corporations, and her key clients include media companies, car manufacturers, retailers and a particular focus on clients within the food and drink sector, acting for several independent drinks companies, breweries and wineries.
