David Upton

David joined Birketts as a Trainee Solicitor in September 2023.

Yet to specialise, he is currently in his third seat, which is split between the Charities and Non for Profit Team in the Ipswich office and the Ecclesiastical Team in the London office.

Day to day, David assists with a wide range of matters in his respective teams, either advising on all aspects of best practice and good governance in the charities and non for profit sector, or supporting the work of the Church of England. David also has a strong background in a broad range of property related matters having previously held seats in the SIPPS/SSAS Team in the Ipswich office and the Property Litigation Team in the Ipswich office.

Experience & education

Prior to joining Birketts, David studied English and Theatre at the University of Sheffield where he was awarded a 2:1 degree. David then helped launch a local micro-brewery in Suffolk, which he subsequently ran for six years.

After leaving the brewery, David returned to education to study a Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PGDL) at the University of Law, which he passed with Distinction. He has since completed a Masters in Law, which he passed with Distinction and was awarded the Dean’s Award for Best Overall Performance in his cohort. David also passed both the SQE1 and SQE2 on his first attempts scoring in the top quintile of his cohort for each.
