Deborah Sharples
Deborah Sharples joined Birketts in August 2019. She is a Partner in our Planning and Environmental Team and leads the Environment and Public Access to Land sub-teams.
Practising in environmental law, planning and public rights of way, Deborah advises a range of clients including manufacturers, waste management businesses, farmers, landowners, developers, and private individuals in relation contentious and non-contentious, civil and criminal matters. Her experience includes work relating to environmental permitting, statutory nuisance and a wide variety of other environmental work. She advises in connection with Environmental Impact Assessment, Biodiversity Net Gain and Nutrient Neutrality.
Deborah acts as an advocate in public inquiries for planning, environmental permitting, rights of way and common land and also in the magistrates’ court in relation to both civil and criminal matters where they relate to her areas of legal practice. She also attends PACE Act interviews with clients who are accused of a range of offences in relation to planning and environmental matters.
Recent Work Highlights
Won an enforcement appeal by inquiry concerning a development in the green belt.
Obtained the Environment Agency’s agreement to an enforcement undertaking in respect of unauthorised work to a riverbed.
For a national charity defeated following an inquiry a claim for a public right of way across one of its properties.
