Ian is a Solicitor in the Property Litigation Team in our Chelmsford office.
Ian joined Birketts as a Trainee in September 2020 and qualified into the Property Litigation Team in March 2022.
Ian has a broad range of experience encompassing both residential and commercial property disputes as well as general property portfolio management and advises clients that include individuals, SMEs, multinational companies, property management agents, building societies, property developers and local authorities.
Ian can advise on a wide range of contentious issues for both private individuals and commercial clients including lease renewals, forfeiture, repossessions, break clauses, breach of covenant, applications for consent, boundary disputes, and more general commercial and residential property disputes. Ian has also previously advised on Land Registration issues, including alterations to the register and adverse possession.
Prior to joining Birketts, Ian gained extensive experience over a number of years working within leading dispute resolution departments in London. Ian’s previous experience includes providing support on a wide range of commercial disputes, such as general commercial litigation, fraudulent banking and finance disputes and numerous arbitrations under the LCIA and ICC institutions.
Recent work highlights
Successfully settled a First Tier Tribunal matter on behalf of the Respondent in respect of a boundary dispute to avoid the proceedings going to trial.
Advised a property investor looking to effect forfeiture at a Premises upon which uncovered extensive criminal activity leading to a specialist enforcement team ceasing illegal drugs, illegal contraband and large quantities of cash.
Successfully advised a client regarding an unlawful occupation by a third-party occupier leading to an assignment of the lease, with an authorised guarantee agreement with the original tenant, including the recovery of all legal costs.
