Maria Peyman

Maria Peyman is the Head of our Intellectual Property Team and is based in our Cambridge office.
Maria has more than 20 years’ experience of acting for clients on a full range of IP disputes involving patents (including patent ownership), copyright, trade marks, and design rights, as well as passing off, and breach of confidence. She regularly represents clients at the High Court, the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (“IPEC”) and the UKIPO (and formerly the EUIPO).
Many of the cases on which Maria acts involve an international element, for example acting for international clients with UK IP assets to protect, or those in disputes where the chosen jurisdiction is England and Wales.
In addition to her specialist IP work, Maria has experience of broader commercial litigation in relation to matters such as contractual disputes, shareholder and director disputes and professional negligence claims. This expertise is of particular assistance when acting in these disputes where IP assets are a core feature.
Maria’s litigation experience encompasses a broad range of products from equipment for construction, aerodynamic modifications for haulage, drinks, fragrance, jewellery and fashion to dishes, vessels for liquids, toys and images of products for retail. Her clients include leading organisations in the food and drink, fashion / jewellery, retail, technology, construction, haulage and energy sectors and professional services.
Maria’s practice incorporates advising on domain name disputes and representing clients in actions using Domain Name Dispute Resolution services as well as at Company Name Tribunal matters. She also advises on social media related disputes, in particular with aspects of defamation.
Maria is recommended and named as a ‘Next Generation Partner’ by Legal 500 [UK 2024].
Maria was admitted as a Solicitor in April 2004 and holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law. She joined Birketts in 2015.
Maria is fluent in Spanish.
