Do your managers:

Providing equality of treatment and opportunity is an important obligation placed on all employers. To ensure your organisation complies with its duties under the Equality Act 2010 and to avoid discrimination claims arising (and to give yourself the best defence when they do) it is essential that your managers are aware of what is required of them to ensure not only legal compliance but that the organisation is in the best possible position to prosper through the advantages that diversity brings. 

Managers leave the course with confidence to deal with equality issues that arise throughout the employment cycle including recruitment, promotions, managing disciplinary issues, grievances, performance, ill health, maternity and pregnancy and requests for flexible working. They will have an increased awareness of disability discrimination law and the additional obligations placed on employers in respect of disabled staff. This workshop is practical and interactive with a focus on examining common situations which might otherwise trip them up. It also covers the little known area of unconscious bias which can often cloud reasoned decisions and lead to unfair outcomes.


The objective of this half-day workshop is to ensure that delegates:

  • understand the key concepts arising out of discrimination legislation that have a practical implication on day to day business decisions 
  • can identify acceptable and unacceptable behaviour in the workplace
  • take a best practice approach to handling complaints of discrimination 
  • respond appropriately if they have witnessed discriminatory treatment 
  • understand how the law applies to their roles, to the issues they deal with and the decisions they make
  • understand what unconscious bias is and the steps required to overcome it.

  1. Setting the scene – what is equality and diversity and why does it matter?
  2. Indepth look into the definition of harassment/acceptable behaviour in the workplace
  3. Who is protected and when? – exercise in identifying the protected characteristics
  4. Types/forms of discrimination – exploring the differences between direct, indirect, harassment, victimisation
  5. Close examination of particular scenarios
    • pre employment health checks
    • pregnancy and maternity
    • flexible working
    • disability
  6. Unconscious bias – what is it, why can it be detrimental and what can we do to guard against it affecting organisational decisions.
