David qualified as a Solicitor in October 2006 and joined Birketts in December 2018.
He is a Legal Director in our Residential Development Team.
Prior to joining Birketts, David worked for 15 years for a regional law firm based in Essex. Whilst David has a broad range of experience in respect of commercial property matters, he has a particular specialism in residential development. David regularly acts for both national and regional house builders, helping them to unlock the development potential of land across the UK. He routinely acts for house builders in the context of options, land acquisition and site assembly, land promotion and joint venture projects. He also has experience in the related area of development finance, helping his housebuilder clients to navigate from term sheets to drawdown as quickly and simply as possible.
Whilst working for his previous firm, his successes include the completion of a development of airspace above commercial premises in London with a gross development value of £10m and the refinance of a portfolio of development sites with a combined gross development value of £37m.
David is based in our Cambridge office.
Recent work experience
- Acting for a developer on the sale and development of a care home to a care home operator with a gross development value of circa £20m. Birketts lead contract drafting and negotiations and also advised on structure, title issues and the construction aspects of this development.
- Acting for an SME developer acquiring a site on a subject to planning basis with a gross development value of circa £10m. The unlocking of this site for development purposes required the detailed analysis and derisking of title issues to ensure deliverability, as well as the formulation and delivery of a site assembly strategy to ensure the viability of the project.
- Acting for the Landowner in a joint venture in respect of an airspace development in London with a gross development value of circa £12m. Birketts advised on structure, security, funding arrangements and existing leasehold integration strategies in respect of that project.
