Matthew Gowen
Matthew joined Birketts in November 2014, having previously been a Consultant for the firm.
He is a Partner (Barrister) and heads the firm’s Regulatory and Corporate Defence Team. He brings with him a wealth of experience from over 20 years at the criminal Bar.
Matthew, formerly a tenant at Red Lion Chambers, London, a leading criminal set, was called to the Bar in October 1992. Whilst at the independent Bar he appeared frequently as a leading junior both for the defence and the Crown in serious criminal cases.
He specialises in advising and representing organisations and directors in all areas of corporate and regulatory crime, particularly health and safety and environmental; currently he is advising on several cases of work related fatality and serious injury. Matthew is heavily involved in the incident investigation work that the team carries out, with the support of its health and safety consultants, for a variety of clients across a wide range of sectors.
He also appears frequently at Coroner’s Inquests.
Matthew is very experienced in advising in relation to monetary crime, Bribery Act compliance, FCA and CMA investigations, account freezing orders and proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act. He continues to represent individual clients charged with serious criminality in the crown court and at professional disciplinary tribunals.
