Michael Corsham
- Profile
Michael qualified as a Solicitor in 2016 and joined Birketts in 2023 as a Senior Associate in the Public Sector Team.
Before joining Birketts, Michael was a senior lawyer in the Government Legal Department advising the Ministry of Justice on national multi-million pound procurements, from procurement strategy and formation to evaluation of tenders and award. In particular Michael has extensive experience of the ‘light touch regime’, permissible modifications during the life of a public contract in accordance with Regulation 72, the lawfulness of making ‘direct awards’ under Regulation 32 and procurement law risk mitigation.
Prior to the Government Legal Department, Michael worked as an in-house legal adviser at a local authority on contracts and governance matters. With experience of local and central government and working in large multi-disciplinary project teams, Michael has a solid understanding of the framework in which public sector organisations need to navigate to bring a project to a conclusion.
As well as advising on commercial ‘business as usual’ contract management and contractual documentation, Michael has advised on a range of public sector commercial issues, from procurement law compliance for public-to-public collaboration and subsidy control, to agreements with media organisations for filming sentencing remarks in court rooms.
Outside of Birketts, Michael is a black belt in karate and enjoys coaching at his local club in Braintree.
