Birketts’ International Team offers a range of services to clients based in the UK with non-UK assets and interests, and to those based or resident outside the UK with financial or business interests in the UK.
Many of our lawyers have worked in London and International law firms and have a history of advising clients on complex and high value matters.
Delivery across borders
As trading becomes increasingly international and people’s affairs more complicated, so Birketts has advanced. Our approach is simple: we recognise the value of understanding the subtle differences that exist between cultures and legal systems. We offer that intangible extra insight that enables our clients to operate across borders or move into new markets more effectively and efficiently and, therefore, with increased confidence.
Our work is founded on the principle that we never compromise on quality. Our clients will always be provided with advice that is clear, relevant and sensitive to the local market.
Fundamental to our international delivery is having access to the finest, carefully selected teams of local lawyers from around the world – we have relationships with experts across the globe.
This allows us to be able to meet all of our clients’ legal needs - wherever required – by providing fully integrated local expertise within a global context.
Corporate and commercial international services
Birketts’ corporate and commercial practice of over 75 lawyers advises on a broad range of commercial activities, including:
- establishing a business in the UK
- acquisitions and disposals
- raising debt and equity finance
- exploitation and protection of technology and intellectual property
- data protection
- international supply chain and commercial relationships, including distribution and agency, and associated competition law issues
- corporate immigration.
International litigation and dispute resolution
Our commercial litigation and dispute resolution practice of over 35 lawyers advises on complex, high value multi-jurisdictional and cross-border disputes for UK and international clients in all major jurisdictions. We can call upon an extensive international network of professional advisers and are familiar with leading arbitral institutions and procedures. We have a strong ethos of achieving commercially sound outcomes, ensuring minimum disruption to your business.
International private client services
Our International Private Client team has considerable experience advising individuals (whether based in the UK or abroad) on a range of tax, trust and succession matters, particularly where there is a need for practical co-ordination of advice across several jurisdictions. We work with international private clients and non-UK intermediaries (including other lawyers, accountants and professional trustees), identifying and advising on UK tax and / or English legal issues, and how those interact with the legal systems of other countries. We also frequently assist non-UK law firms which are handling the majority of a probate estate administration outside the UK, but require assistance with realising UK assets and expert advice on the associated UK tax and compliance matters.
Other international services
We also offer a range of specialist legal services, including:
- international shipping and trade disputes
- international trade marks registrations and portfolio maintenance
- company secretarial services for newly established companies in England and Wales
- notarial services for private and corporate clients
- advice on UK tax issues arising from international transactions or dealing in assets held outside the UK.
We have a range of relationships with other UK advisers whose complementary services are regularly required – accountants, land agents, banks and inward investment specialists.
Through our membership of IAG Global, we are able to offer our clients access to a network of English speaking lawyers, accountants and tax advisors at independent practices around the world.
