Emily is a Senior Associate in our Private Client Advisory Team and spearheads the firm’s cross office Landed Estates practice group.

Emily specialises in advising Landed Estate owners, whether trustee, corporate or individuals, on succession planning matters including trust work (including Settled Land Act trusts) and tax planning.

Emily has a wealth of experience in matters relating to inheritance tax mitigation, particularly agricultural and business reliefs, including “Balfour” planning. Emily also has a particular interest in heritage property tax reliefs.

Prior to joining Birketts, Emily qualified and practised as a Solicitor with a specialist private wealth City law firm before joining the Landed Estates Team for a large national law firm.

Emily is part of Birketts’ Norwich Private Client Advisory Team but also spends time in the Cambridge and Ipswich offices developing and supporting the Landed Estates practice group.

Emily is recommended and named as a ‘Rising Star’ by Legal 500 [UK 2024]. In this edition, a client notes “Emily O’Donnell’s approach was efficient, wise and personable. These are important characteristics when dealing with clients who are requiring help to plan their affairs prior to death. The complications of sorting out what both of us wanted to consider requires a legal advisor to illustrate mastery of legal possibilities in a sensitive manner. Emily provided this service superbly.” Another adds “‘Emily O’Donnell has been very thoughtful, responsive, creative and has brought a huge range of knowledge and experience to achieve a smooth advisory process and successful outcome. The service and advice we have received compares very favourably indeed with trusts advice we have received elsewhere before.”

Emily studied Classics at the University of Cambridge.
