Jeremy joined Birketts in January 2019. He is a Partner in our Commercial Property Team, specialising in strategic land, development and clean energy related projects. He is based in our Cambridge office.

With over 20 years’ experience as a residential and commercial development lawyer, including seven years spent as in-house counsel for a developer running large scale planning and development projects, Jeremy draws on wide industry knowledge and hands on development experience acquiring, funding, developing and building out projects,  to offer commercially focussed, practical, legal advice. He negotiates promotion agreements, options, conditional contracts, and buying and selling development land. He is also adept at advising clients contemplating and engaged in development projects through site assembly, joint ventures, landowner agreements, and equalisation arrangements, using his experience of acting for both developers and landowners to keep legal discussions to areas which matter when putting in place commercially sensible contracts.

Jeremy has long had an interest in building out projects, and uses his own practical building experience as developer to advise clients undertaking self-builds, through buying, planning, funding, building, and selling, and on larger projects with clients themselves building out residential development sites of multiple residential houses for sale or private rent. Advising landowners building out sites of 5 to 15 houses is an area of particular focus. Design lead residential development is a real interest as is developing buildings and developments which enhance their communities, particularly those in a rural setting.

As part of his core development work Jeremy advises clients in clean energy matters in particular battery storage and solar energy, acquiring sites, putting in place options, leases, funding and undertaking site development, along with reinstatement requirements. He enjoys being engaged in this rapidly evolving, expanding industry, coordinating the range of legal expertise required by clients, in particular working very closely with his corporate colleagues and with clients on the commercial aspects of projects.

Jeremy has a long association with the land, coming from an East Anglian farming background, and his clients include landowners, farmers, investors, funders, developers and house-builders in the agricultural land, property development and clean energy sectors.

Jeremy retains a keen interest in agricultural and rural matters and is a member of the Agricultural Law Association.

Outside of work he is a member of West Norfolk Cricket Club, the Mavericks Cricket Club, Newmarket Real Tennis Club, is a keen supporter of Nottinghamshire Cricket Club, Nottingham RFC and West Bridgford RFC. He enjoys a game of tennis and finding parts of a golf course others do not normally see.

Jeremy qualified as Solicitor in September 1999. He is recommended by Legal 500 [UK 2021].
