- Other Information
Susan joined Birketts in October 2012, having trained at a Cambridge firm and worked at another Chelmsford firm. She passed her Society of Trust and Estate Practitioner exams with a distinction and has held many positions on the STEP Essex committee, including Chair, for the permitted term, student liaison officer, events officer and her current position of secretary.
Susan is a Partner in our Private Client Advisory Team and assists clients with a full range of succession and tax planning, including the preparation of Wills, providing inheritance tax advice, advising on trusts and powers of attorney.
Having assisted clients with estate planning for many years, she is aware of the importance that clients’ wishes take effect in the manner intended or that an estate administration is dealt with in a timely, supportive manner. Every client is unique and Susan tailors her advice according to the individual circumstances and, where appropriate, the advice is given alongside that of colleagues in other teams within the firm to ensure fully rounded, holistic advice is obtained.
Susan also deals with estate administrations, including advising on Deeds of Variation, where individuals inherit assets/funds from an estate but wish to pass them to others in a tax efficient manner, as part of tax planning.
Susan is recommended and ranked in band 1 by Chambers High Net Worth [UK 2022]. A source notes that “her knowledge on trusts is superb and she provides her advice in a timely and concise manner. Her level of communication is first class.” Another commentator says: “Susan combines excellent technical knowledge with great interpersonal savvy as well as a wider commercial approach which makes her stand out as one of the best private client lawyers I have encountered in the region.”
Susan is recommended and named as a ‘Rising Star’ by Legal 500 [UK 2022]. Clients in the previous edition say: “I was impressed by the personalised response and ownership taken by Susan Young, once the work had been passed across to her. She was proactive at every turn and most importantly shared her movements (e.g. annual leave in advance) so that information exchanges were proactively managed so as not to undermine delivery efficiencies”.
Susan grew up on an Essex farm and loves being outdoors. In particular, outside of work she enjoys exploring both the local area and further afield with her family, dog and horse.
Susan combines excellent technical knowledge with great interpersonal savvy as well as a wider commercial approach which makes her stand out as one of the best private client lawyers I have encountered in the region.
