Matthew Powell

Matthew qualified as a Solicitor in 2015 and joined Birketts in 2023 as a Legal Director in our Real Estate Team.

He specialises in real estate based financial and asset structuring, large-scale development projects, and energy capture and storage.

Matthew has extensive experience advising clients across the whole gamut of these areas, and has led on the acquisition, financing / refinancing, management, and disposal of major assets by institutional funds and private equity vehicles, along with the structuring and integration of corporate entities required for efficient project implementation.

Matthew particularly focuses on development agreements and complex project documents required to undertake large-scale regeneration projects, public private partnerships, and tax driven structuring schemes in concert with landowners, institutional investors, and funds. He has worked extensively with a variety of major landowners and UK life funds to implement community regeneration and development works, advising on real estate tax structuring, value capture and project risk, construction considerations, and public procurement (using competitive dialogue for both developers and procuring bodies).

Matthew has experience delivering major mixed-use schemes incorporating infrastructure creation, public development works, housing (both public and private), retail spaces, and office complexes.
