Edward qualified as a Solicitor in March 2015 and joined Birketts from an international law firm in London in May 2017. He is a Senior Associate in our Planning and Environment Team and has a broad practice, advising a range of clients in respect of planning, environmental and highways law.

Edward specialises in all aspects of town and country planning law, both contentious and non-contentious. He has significant experience advising developers and landowners in respect of commercial and residential development, including planning due diligence, planning agreements and input into transactional documents. Edward also has experience of the planning appeals process, which includes acting as an advocate for interested parties at appeal hearings. In recent years, Edward has also assisted a number of local authority clients.

In addition to his planning practice, Edward undertakes a range of environmental work, particularly in connection with transactions or where environmental matters arise as part of the planning process. Recent experience in this area includes advising a local authority in respect of a statutory challenge against the Secretary of State’s decision to grant planning permission in breach of the requirements of the Habitats Regulations, advising an interested party in relation to a judicial review of a planning permission brought on water neutrality grounds and advising a range of clients on the potential implications of the introduction of mandatory biodiversity net gain and conservation covenants. Edward also regularly advises on the implications of the contaminated land regime as well as negotiating environmental warranties and indemnities in corporate transactions.

Edward has extensive recent experience of tree protection matters, both under planning legislation and forestry legislation. This has included advising clients in respect of alleged breach of notices issued under the Forestry Act as well as advising clients in respect of alleged unlawful felling in conservation areas.

Edward has advised on a range of highways matters, including adoption agreements and stopping up orders.

Edward is based in our Cambridge office.

In his spare time, Edward enjoys cooking and photography. He also enjoys SCUBA diving as is qualified up to PADI Rescue Diver level.
